Swim Coaching Programme

The Jellie Park swim coaching programme is operated by Christchurch City Council who are responsible for organising the staff for the teaching and coaching of the swimmers through all levels in the coaching programme. Swimmers who wish to compete can join JASI, the swimming club which organises all club and competition activities.

Every swimmer in the coaching programme at Jellie Park and in the competitive arena that the swimmers of the Jasi Swim Team are involved in, is encouraged to reach their full potential in swimming, whether that be at school, local, regional, national or international level.

We pride ourselves on the development of the swimmers with a solid understanding of the basic fundamentals of swimming (such as streamlining and good stroke technique), along with an ability to apply these skills in a wide range of activities.

Good technique is the basis of all good swimming. In the Jellie Park coaching programme we look to develop this through a consistent programme of stroke progression and development continually challenging swimmers to improve and refine their skills.

To develop a consistent progression of performances, swimmers are encouraged to work at an optimal level rather than at a maximum level thus encouraging a continued raising of performance standards.

Swimming is not just about participation in sport, but also about developing the social skills of life which have to be practised when training in a busy pool. We hope that swimmers will enjoy the experience, make new friends and learn to deal with the ups and downs which accompany any walk of life. We hope that swimming through our programme will be an enjoyable, educational and successful experience.

As swimmers progress through the Swimsmart programme and into the Gold level and then into the training squads they improve their stroke skills, their racing skills, and also improve by taking part in the Splash Nights on Friday nights. Some choose to join the Jasi Swim Team and compete against other clubs swimmers and can go onto represent NZ at international Events such as the 2006 Commonwealth Games where 2 Jasi swimmers competed and at the 2006 world short course championships where 2 swimmers placed in the top 10 in the world.
